Research

I am a fourth year Bioinformatics graduate student at UCSD. My advisor is Vineet Bafna, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Our research is highly collaborative: I also work with Prof. Ben Raphel, at Brown University, Prof. Colin Collins, at UCSF, and Prof. Dennis Carson and Dr. Yu-Tsueng Liu, at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. As one might suspect from the title of my program, I am interested in bioinformatics research. My thesis topic is on structural variation in cancer, though I have previously done research in comparative genomics, phylogenetics, and structural polymorphisms in SNP data. My research has been supported by the NSFGRP (National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program) for the last three years.

Before coming to UCSD I was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. I majored in Bioengineering and did a research apprenticeship under Prof. Michael Freeling (in the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology). I worked on a project aimed at identifying and characterizing Conserved Noncoding Sequences (CNSs) in the grasses (specifically, corn, rice, and arabidopsis).

Teaching

I was a Graduate Student Intructor (TA) for the following two classes at UCSD:
  • CSE 182- "Biological Data Analysis" (formerly "Biological Databases")
  • CSE 181- "Molecular Sequence Analysis"

  • I also used to be a volunteer teacher/tutor at PTPS and OASES while an undergrad at Berkeley:
  • PTPS- The People's Test Preparation Service. A free, semester long, SAT course for Oakland area high school students
  • OASES- Oakland Asian Students Educational Services. An after school tutoring program for all levels of students in Oakland's Chinatown.

  • And, for the sake of competeness, I also (briefly) taught SATs/GREs at Kaplan.

    Interests

  • Basketball: I don't play as much as I used to, but I still represent with the Bioinformatics Intramural Team (I'd link you to our recreation division, but then you'd see how poorly we did this year).

  • Climbing: I enjoy indoor and outdoor climbing, usually with fellow bioinformaticians Sourav "spider" Bandyopadhyay and Gary "the Gecko" Hon. Recently, I nearly plummeted to my doom while climbing in Thailand. Was it worth it? " . . . Totally."

  • Drawing: As you can probably guess if you check out my links, I like comics. I originally got into them because of the art (at least that's what I tell people). I still like to draw whenever I get some free time.

  • Food: Most of my day revolves around either the consumption or procurement of food. I also enjoy baking pies, which (in case you were wondering) is not emasculating at all.
